Have you ever had one of those weekends where cosmic stars are aligned and everything falls into place? It could quite be one of the best weekends of your life, give or take a few. I’ve had countless great weekends in my life, and this one is in the top 10! A quick rundown of our weekend…Soho, Greenwich Village, Comedy Cellar (must go if your ever in NYC!), super fun night out, Central Park, Shopping, Dirty Heads/Sublime concert (VIP), hung out with the bands, classes with some of the “greats” in hair and then home to Indy! Whew!

Tyler Mason Salon and Spa had an awesome opportunity to visit NYC. We had the great pleasure of taking a class at the Sam Brocato Salon in Soho, which was taught by none other than Sam Brocato. When you pick up his Brocato products at our salon, just know that you are purchasing great products designed by a great man. It was amazing how Sam and his staff were so talented, down to earth and just plain nice. I take such pleasure in knowing that I not only love his products, but stand behind the man because he is a genuinely nice person. I was blown away by how a salon of this caliber still has that down home feel. It made me very proud to know that Tyler Mason also has that same warmth. We learned so much in those couple of hours we were at his salon. Here is a quick rundown of what we took away … Hair is meant to be individualized for each person. There’s no one way of cutting hair and each hair cut can be custom made for the guest’s head shape. They also previewed a new approach to straightening hair and we will be sharing that with our guests in just a few weeks. Creating a look for someone is such a creative process and the time and thought that is put into one haircut just blows my mind. It was truly an honor to be in the presence of greatness, we really can’t thank Sam Brocato and his team enough for their time.

Our next stop was at a fab restaurant in Little Italy with Joe Tucci, the brains behind the product line “Shuga”. He was a trip! From his white hair and soul patch, to his funky jacket. His stories were fun and he kept things moving. We also met John Dellaria who is the founder of Pyrametrics Cutting Method for hair cutting. He’s very soft spoken, but when he talks it’s a good idea to listen to what he says. The amount of time that is put into a product line amazes me. You have to come up with something that no one else has and that everyone wants and needs. “Shuga” is a great product and after learning more about some of their products we are very excited to bring you the entire line from “Shuga”.

There aren’t enough words to describe a weekend like we had. We brought home a lot of energy and a lot of wisdom that will stick with us for years to come. One word to sum it up would be AMAZING! Thanks to everyone involved, we can’t wait to do it again. Sam, Joe and John, thank you for taking time to teach us, we crave it and love it!

Tyler Mason Salon Spa has had the wonderful opportunity to sponsor the Colts Cheerleaders for six seasons (and hopefully many more in the future). I know that our sponsorship may seem a little odd to outsiders but it really is a perfect fit. Our partnership with the Colts allows us to pair with a business that cares about its’ community and the people in it and gives our salon and our employees experiences that are one of a kind! Our stylists have so much fun helping with auditions, finding the perfect “look” for each cheerleader every season and preparing these gorgeous girls’ hair and makeup for photo shoots and each home game. This year the Colts took Indianapolis to the Super Bowl and although we didn’t win we had a great time this season.

Two of our tm girls had the opportunity to make the trek down to Miami to help get the Colts cheerleaders ready for the big game. Here is a snapshot of their Super Bowl experience:

Michele:

“This trip was my first trip not only to a Super Bowl but also to Florida. The game was a big draw for the trip but I would also be seeing the ocean and beach for the first time ever as well! As I was told by everyone — Florida was a wonderful place to visit and the weather made it even better! A co-worker, Andrea, and I were the only two people from Tyler Mason that were able to make the trip. We enjoyed a fun car ride down and even did a little relaxing on the beach Saturday and Sunday before the game started.
After an hour spent trying to park the car it was a mad dash to get into the stadium and down the maze of tunnels to find the locker rooms. The two of us had roughly an hour to get everyone prepped for the big day (usually we have 5-6 stylists and 3 hours to prepare all the cheerleaders for a game). My adrenaline was pumping and the hairspray clouds were forming as we back-combed and curled our way to beautiful hair! Styling cheer hair is always fun for me because the bigger the hair the better!! I do have to take a moment to thank Tammie Baker our owner at TMSS for helping to make this trip possible! I look forward to more Super Bowl trips in the future!!”

Andrea:

“The Super Bowl is one for the bucket list. It was one of the best experiences of my life! The beaches were gorgeous and everyone we came in contact with was friendly — even though most of them were Saint’s fans L. The traffic might be the only not-so-positive thing to say about South Beach.

Even though the Colts lost, I wouldn’t think twice of making the 17 hour haul back to Miami tonight. We got to see people and experience things that I never thought I would be able to experience or see in my life. We were able to be part of the behind the scenes action while doing the Colts cheerleader’s hair and makeup in a Super Bowl locker room, we watched “The Who” from the press box, and was star struck when we caught glimpses of Brad Pitt (twice), John Travolta, Jesse Jackson and Serena Williams. …and yes, Angelina was very much with Brad!

It was an ultimate experience I will never forget. GO COLTS, GET ‘EM NEXT YEAR!”

After spending 2 hours at the salon or spa, you look and feel like a new person. Now comes that awkward moment … it’s time to pay. You’re wondering if you should tip your service provider or how much to give her?

According to Jill Bremer, AICI, CIP of Bremer Communications, “Tipping has been around for hundreds of years. A tip, or gratuity, is defined as a gift of money given to someone for performing a service or menial task, over and above the payment due for the service. Tips are not required, but they are expected by many people in the service industry. In fact, many U.S. waiters and waitresses are paid less than minimum wage as tips are expected to make up the other part of their income.”

25 years ago, the above definition may have been true in the salon industry but times have definitely changed. First, the amount of hours a student spends in a cosmetology or massage institute has almost doubled and licensing requirements have been increased and tightened. In addition, Tyler Mason requires an additional 4-6 month training program, a “master’s program” of sorts, before our service providers can begin to service guests. Because of the education and licensing requirements needed in our industry, the salon/spa industry is better compared to the medical, dental, insurance, real estate or building trades; all of these rely on referrals for their business success and do not accept “tips” for their services.

Since our company’s inception in 1992, Tyler Mason has been a “no tipping required” salon/spa. We believe in word of mouth marketing; that our guests’ glowing recommendations of their experience here and the referrals of their friends and family in lieu of a gratuity are more meaningful on many levels. We are committed to helping our employees achieve their dreams and goals as well as upgrading the image of the beauty and wellness industry. We believe that the level of service our guests experience with each visit is not by accident and not a “menial task”. Tyler Mason employees enjoy above average compensation, health, disability, and life insurance, paid vacation, 401K, and on-going education in technical skills, customer service, business systems, public speaking and leadership.

Ours is such a rewarding industry. Guests come to us for more than just a haircut, pedicure, massage or facial. Of course, Tyler Mason has technically talented employees, but one of the most important reasons our staff is booked for weeks in advance? They’re nice. They’re fun. They make our guests feel welcome. They make people feel good about themselves, inside and out.

So, the next time you experience Tyler Mason’s extraordinary service, simply say thanks! And then, tell 3 friends, so they’ll tell 3 friends, and so on, and so on, and so on.

Stay in Touch……Tammie Baker ,President/Owner
